Sarasota County is enacting a state authorized program that will enable property owners to pay for improvements such as solar panels and hurricane shutters with annual assessments on their property tax bills, and Manatee County may be next.
When he served in the state Senate, Mike Bennett, now Manatee’s elections supervisor, helped pass a statute that allows local governments to adopt a PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) plan.
“I was quite proud of PACE,” Bennett told the Manatee County Commission during a recent discussion about the mechanics of how the program works.
Although the Manatee commissioners were in work session mode and could not vote, they gave their staff an informal nod that they are interested in getting a PACE program underway. Their discussion will resume Nov. 7.
