LAKELAND – City officials and representatives from NRG Energy joined approximately 12,000 solar panels soaking up the sun Wednesday morning to celebrate Lakeland Electric’s latest green-energy project.
The 3.15-megawatt installation has been actively providing power to Lakeland Electric customers since October. The six months before that it laid dormant, completed but inactive, after the city’s original partner on the project, SunEdison, declared bankruptcy in April before flipping the switch.
In bright sunlight, the farm will produce about enough energy to power 1,000 homes and is expected to avoid producing about 11 million pounds of carbon dioxide in its first year of operation, according to Lakeland Electric. [click for full article]
